Psycroptic are one of Australia’s foremost metal bands, leading the extreme metal scene in Australia, and raising the standard for others. Formed in Tasmania, the band has been very quickly gaining a reputation for their skill, talent and technique – which is shown through their two album releases and many national live shows. They have a very loyal and large fanbase, of which they are very deserving – their extreme style of play is hard to pinpoint to a specific genre, but it is some of the heaviest stuff you’ll ever come across. The following interview is with Dave from Psycroptic – one hell of a metal drummer and an awesome guy! d7: Thanks so much for taking the time to help support metal! First of all, when and how did Psycroptic start off? What motivated you to create a band? How did you guys meet? Dave: No problems, thanks for supporting metal!! Psycroptic started in 1999 after the demise of the previous bands we all played in. We knew each other from just going to gigs, and seeing each other there. Myself and Joe had a few songs written that we thought would be cool to play with some other people so we asked Chalky and Cam whether they would like to jam and see how things went. That’s basically it really. d7: Was it difficult or challenging being such an extreme band in a place such as Tasmania? Dave: Yes, and no. Yes because it is isolated and very costly to tour outside of the place. No, because it helps keep us away from ‘bigger’ scenes, so we can do our own thing. Tasmania is pretty laid back, so we can just focus on writing the best stuff in our abilities. d7: What are your major influences (musical or otherwise) on your music, and yourselves as people? Dave: We take influence from all styles of metal, as well as some outside metal?if its good we listen to it. Basically there is no one thing that influences us (outside metal) more than the other. Its really just about the music for us. d7: It’s pretty easy to see that Psycroptic are really starting to be noticed on not only a national scale, but internationally as well. Do you wish to take this as far as you can and gain as much exposure as possible? What’s the bands ultimate goal? Dave: Well, of course we want to take the band as far as it can go, but that doesn’t mean we are doing it for any other reason than the love of the music. Its really great for us to be able to travel around the place and do shows, so really that’s our only goal, to make the best music we can, and play to as many people as we can. d7: Any news on a new album or release? I know that a lot of fans are really looking forward to new material, as your current and past work has created avery firm and loyal fanbase. Dave: We are finishing up the writing process as we speak, so I’d say a late 2005 release is the most likely thing. Not sure how many songs it will have yet, but it will be in Psycroptic style of course, probably a bit more extreme than “scepter..”. d7: Anything you’d like to say to all your fans out there? Any words? Dave: Thanks very much for the interview, much appreciated!
